“Star Trek Online” Operator Cryptic Studios Faces Layoffs

The latest company under Embracer Group to face staff reductions is Cryptic Studios, the developer behind games like “Neverwinter” and “Star Trek Online.”

Winter Mullenix, the studio’s narrative director, posted on social media that she was no longer with the studio due to “workforce reduction.”

A spokesperson from Cryptic Studios confirmed the “personnel changes” at the company to GI.biz. As part of Embracer’s restructuring, the studio will operate under DECA Games in the future. The spokesperson did not specify the exact number of affected employees.

The spokesperson stated, “As part of the Embracer Group comprehensive restructuring plan, Cryptic Studios is now under the umbrella of DECA Games. In addition to this organizational change, our commitment to Embracer’s cost reduction directive has necessitated difficult personnel changes, including parting ways with some team members.”

“Cryptic Studios will provide job assistance and support for those affected to facilitate a smooth transition. Cryptic remains committed to supporting its cornerstone free-to-play games and the communities behind them.”

Since announcing its restructuring plan in June, Embracer has laid off employees from several companies, including Crystal Dynamics, Gearbox Publishing, Digic, Beamdog, Zen Studios, and more. It has also shuttered long-standing studios like Volition Games and Campfire Cabal.
